Dr. Karen Yaw is a Licensed Professional Counselor who integrates strength-based, client-centered interventions to promote growth, wellness, and personal autonomy. Her work is rooted in compassion and guided by a deep commitment to helping individuals cultivate a stronger sense of self, recognize their needs, and foster healing within meaningful relationships. Karen holds a Ph.D. in Counseling and Psychological Studies from Regent University and is an International Affiliate of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC). Her global experience includes leading conferences, mission trips, and retreats across Africa, Latin America, and Central Asia. Passionate about maternal mental health, she is an active member of the Postpartum Support Virginia–Woodbridge Maternal Health Coalition and has received specialized training in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). A lifelong learner and adventurer, Karen has lived in Hungary, Ghana, and Mexico with her husband and two children. In her free time, she enjoys baking sourdough bread, exploring nature trails, and reading memoirs. She is also a creative writer and the author of a children’s book inspired by her international experiences.

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith, which has been a constant source of strength and guidance throughout my journey. I've also learned the importance of embracing transition and facing challenges with resilience. Each obstacle has taught me something valuable and helped shape the person and professional I am today.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to develop the ability to hold both peace and uncertainty at the same time—that’s where true resilience is built. I also learned the importance of recognizing when it's time to pivot, especially if you find yourself stuck in routine. Growth often comes from knowing when to embrace change.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women entering this industry to always keep in mind the legacy they want to leave behind. Let that vision guide your decisions, your values, and the way you show up—both personally and professionally. When you lead with purpose, the path becomes clearer.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges—and opportunities—in the field right now is ensuring that we are preserving the progress we've made while continuing to advance. It’s about maintaining momentum, staying innovative, and being intentional about equity and sustainability as we grow.

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Courage is one of the core values that guides both my work and personal life. I believe in the importance of taking risks, stepping outside of comfort zones, and embracing the unknown to create meaningful growth and impact.
